San Francisco Music Box

Today's Fillmore District, while one of San Francisco's most diverse neighborhoods, bears little resemblance to the cosmopolitan place it once was. This district, which has arguably changed more than any other in the city, once held a large Jewish settlement, replete with synagogues, bakeries, and kosher markets. It also had a huge Japanese community, now centered in Japantown but not as extensive as in the prewar years; amusements like the Chutes, Dreamland boxing ring, and theatres; schools, churches, and a celebrated "Jazz District" that hosted the top names in music for many years. And in one of the most controversial displays of civic power, this densely populated area fell to the forces of redevelopment, bisected by the ambitious plan to widen Geary Boulevard, creating a freeway-like road through the district and forcing out thousands of dwellers whose homes were either moved or demolished.

Named as the seventh greatest actor on AFI's List of "50 Greatest Screen Legends," Clark Gable reigned supreme as a screen icon during the 1930's and 40's. Six of Gables 75 feature films are remastered and now available on DVD in the new "Clark Gable: The Signature Collection." Includes: "Boom Town," "China Seas," "Dancing Lady," "Mogambo," "San Francisco" and "Wife Vs. Secretary." "Boom Town" - In this pyrotechnics-filled film classic, the only things bigger than the adventure are the four stars: screen giants Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy as the oilmen and Claudette Colbert and Hedy Lamarr as the women in their tumultuous lives. As the foursome struggle through the personal upheaval of love and loyalties, wealth comes a gusher and a rig bursts into a screen-filling inferno that could turn dreams to dust. No wonder "Boom Town" boomed at the box office, too, as the biggest moneymaker of 1940. "China Seas" - Rugged Captain Alan Gaskell (Clark Gable) sails the perilous waters between Hong Kong and Singapore with a secret cargo: a fortune in British gold. That's not the only risky cargo he carries. Both his fiery mistress (Jean Harlow) and his refined fiancee (Rosalind Russell) are aboard! With their wisecracking banter, gutsy glamour and dynamic physicality, Gable and Harlow prove once again that they were the '30s most scorching screen pair in this rough-and-tumble tale of the sea. "Dancing Lady" - A Broadway chorine (Joan Crawford) needs a little help with her hoofing, so her dance director (Clark Gable) gets an idea. A good idea. "Do you feel like going through that opening number with Mr. Astaire?" And Fred Astaire, making his screen debut, shows the lady how it's done. Three film icons give the backstage musical a jolt of superstar electricity in a song and dance and romance-filled extravaganza featuring support by Nelson Eddy, Robert Benchley and "The Three Stooges" and tunes by Rodgers and Hart, Burton Lane, Dorothy Fields and more musical greats.

San Francisco Conservatory of Music - San Francisco Conservatory of Music, founded in 1917, is a music school, with an enrollment of about 300 collegiate students. In addition it offers adult education and pre-college education.

San Francisco Sound - The San Francisco Sound refers to rock music performed live and recorded by San Francisco-based rock groups of the mid 1960s to early 1970s. It was associated with the counterculture community in San Francisco during these years.

San Francisco Club for the Deaf - What began as a deaf person's club on Valencia Street in San Francisco in the 1930's, the San Francisco Club for the Deaf became a notable music venue located in the same building and remained open for an 18 month period. It closed with a party hosted by the artist and filmmaker Bruce Conner.
